Faith, Flies, & Feathers

Sharing a Pastor’s passion for the Lord, pursuing Him through my love for hunting, fishing, and sharing stories from the field.

Sermons

A collection of sermons I’ve preached to my congregations over the years. This is by no means meant to be a “best of” collection and is more of a curated collection of sermons that were particularly meaningful to me for various reasons, and I will try to share what some of those reasons were when I feel it’s relevant, but John Wesley once wisely stated, “I look upon all the world as my parish,” and through the wonder of the internet we now have the ability to live that out as a reality. My prayer is by sharing these sermons, it might just help somebody know Jesus.

Meditations

A collection of thoughts, studies, and topics I’ve wanted to share on Christianity, theology, and the wonder of the Trinity. I am an ordained minister in the Global Methodist Church with a passion for theology with a Wesleyan accent. I fell in love with theology during my seminary training at Truett Seminary, and I wanted to attempt to take these deep theological questions of the church and try to address them in the way that a lay person can interact with and develop a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Christian doctrines.

Fishing

I don’t think it was a coincidence that Jesus asked fisherman to be his first followers, and I know the Lord has spoken to me on the water, through the relationships I’ve made in the stream, and the Big Fish stories I’ve been a part of over the years, and I hope to share my passion for fishing with the world around me.

Hunting

As the Turnpike Troubadours sing, “Well the covey took wing, shotguns a-singing, a pointing dog down in the old logging road…” There is just something majestic about the connection between faith and the pursuit of game that sings to a man’s heart. The images of the woods on a cold November morning, the sunrise over a golden field listening to pheasants cackle, or the grin of a brother across a shared campfire telling stories – these all speak to my soul, and I wanted to share those memories and images with the world.

The World is my Parish – John Wesley

Why am I doing this?

I’ve felt a call on my life to not only follow the Lord, using the skills and passions He’s given me, but to invite others to come alongside me in the pursuit of Christ through study and fellowship.

In recent years, it seems like we’re all trying to find our little niche or nook in the online world. Most people have chosen to establish and share their lives through the use of social media, and I’ve done that thing. I’ve run the rat race and felt the dopamine highs and lows of watching posts hit or flounder, but in 2021 I realized I didn’t enjoy it anymore. I pulled back from social media and revisited passions that had previously captured my heart.

In that time I stayed in the background, absorbing but rarely interacting and almost never posting. It felt freeing in a sense and disjointed from the new way of communication in another. I found my voice again through all of the noise and realized that I enjoyed being online and having a place to capture my thoughts and adventures, but I didn’t like the frenzied, instant-gratification pace of social media. So, out of that desire was born an idea for a blog, website, community, ministry that could morph and take the shape it needed through a slower media format of storytelling the old fashioned way – with words and images.

But, ultimately, I’m doing this to attempt to provide the world for my sons that I hope they get to live in. A world the lives as if it’s ruled by the Kingdom of God. I’m doing this so that they might know their dad a little bit more, and so they might know the world I want them to live in.

“He replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart & with all your soul & with all your mind.’” (Mt. 22:37)

Why Faith, Flies, and Feathers?

Jesus desires for us to love Him with everything we have. If we don’t include him in the desires that are closest to our heart, then what are we doing? I love hunting and fishing, and these are places and spaces where I experience God through His creation. Jesus told some of the best parables through shared life experiences and I hope to do the same by sharing my passions and stories with others.

My desire is that this is more than just a place for me to share my theological ponderings, adventures, and fishing stories. It is something I hope to see build into a community of men pursuing life together in discipleship under Jesus, providing small group gatherings and hunting and fishing excursions for groups in the years to come.
